An endearing but troubled woman believes the fictitious characters in a play are based on real people and events. Worried about what has become of the character named Blanche after she was committed to a mental institution, the woman, accompanied by her best friend and constant companion, "Mister Vodka," travels by train to New Orleans to find Blanche. Because the streetcar named Desire no longer exists, she's advised to take a cab. She chooses the fifth one in line because it looks like a "Golden Chariot." The cab is actually a classic yellow Checker owned by a grumpy ex-Jerseyite whose wife has left him and who leads a dull life. Until a "ditsy" blue-eyed blonde plops herself down in the front passenger seat of his cab.
"...if we're going to be traveling together we ought to introduce ourselves."
"We ain't going to China, lady, we're just goin' cross town."
"Yes, but I'll be eternally grateful for you rescuing my luggage, so how can you be my hero if you won't tell me your name?"
Hero! Ha, that was a good one. He jerked a hand toward the ID tag attached to his visor. "The name's Art. Art Barkoff."
"I am very pleased to meet you, Mr. Barkoff. My name is Belle Reve." She stifled a gasp. The name of the old plantation where Blanche and her sister Stella grew up just popped out of her mouth as if she'd been using it all her life. But now that she had, it seemed only fitting. It made her feel more connected to Blanche.
"Well," she said brightly, "shall we go?"
And so it begings, a ride that will lead this pair of opposites far beyond the boundaries of New Orleans, a ride that will change their lives forever.

"People feel most at home where they feel safe. Where they can be themselves. Where people and things are familiar, and the scary world is kept outside." These are the words of Belle Reve, the main character in "Searching for Blanche."At the onset of this entertaining and thought-provoking novel, Belle, an alcoholic with an irrational fear of public spaces, purports to be searching for Blanche Dubois, the "I have always depended on the kindness of strangers" antagonist in Tennessee William's play, A Streetcar named Desire. But actually, Belle is searching for herself. Aiding her is Art, a cab driver, and also the stranger on whom Belle comes to depend.
In this novel, that is also a love story as well as a journey story, comparisons between Blanche Dubois and Belle Reve are compassionate and well-woven, partially because the author, Mary Kay Remick is a former certified substance abuse counselor in the state mental health system who must have dealt with women such as Belle, and Blanche. But more than that, Ms. Remick is an excellent writer, able to create scenes that make the reader laugh and cry. The story of Belle and Art won't let go of the reader, even after the book is finished.

Searching for Blanche edition by Mary Kay Remick Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Rarely a book stays in my heart, but this story about Belle found it's way in and warmed it. Reading about Belle is not simply reading a book, it's kind of a therapy through the back door
Did you ever ask yourself "Am I a bit to naiv? Am I too annoying when I always have to loudly express my comfort, discomfort, excitement.... about places, people, food....? Should I just be a little bit less intense and excentric?"
Go along with Belle on her journey to search for Blanche DuBois (a character of a play write of Tennessee Williams, by the way). Belle is everything naiv, intense, excentric, honest - and by being who she is, she brings the sunshine and warmth and courage into the heart of her surrounders.
We all should have a little of Belle in us, the world would be an even better place....
This is a riveting novel that kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next! The author shows depth of understanding of mental illness as she paints a picture of Belle in her search for a fictional character. Her characterizations of Belle's associates are likewise rounded and realistic. In addition, her descriptions of New Orleans will make anyone familiar with the French Quarter feel as if he or she were right in the middle of the action. I was fascinated with the wise use of detail that made scenes come alive. What a good read!
What a nice pleasant book to read. Belle is so darling and a true Southern Belle. She is full of love and improves the lives of the people she comes in contact with that let her be herself. I guess I would say that this is basicly a story of a ditsy blond and her friend, the New Yorkish cabbie. These two people are so different but actually so alike in certain ways.
This is a sweet book and a real joy to read and follow Belle through the story as she learns to be more independent and less frightened of life.
Any of us women should feel blessed if we have just a little bit of Belle in us. I know I'm glad I got to meet her and get to know her.
You won't regrett reading this book. It's a "feel-good" read. -}
Helen M. Friese, Food and Travel Writer, Author of WHERE ATLANTANS DINEBLANCHE DU BOIS, STELLA, STANLEY, STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, BELLE REVE. Do all these names sound familiar? Do they perhaps bring back memories of Tennessee Williams?Mary Kay Remick's book is intended to do just that. For Belle Reve is searching for Blanche Du Bois in present day New Orleans and hooks up with a grumpy cab driver who gets caught up in her fantasy. These two opposite characters travel far beyond the boundaries of the "Big Easy" beforetheir saga is over.Belle is a troubled woman suffering from agoraphobia who meets Art Barkoff, the Checker taxi driver, a big rumply bearlike man who helps her with her impossible quest. The journey changes both of their lives forever.Author, Mary Kay Remick, maintains the pace with just enough mystery and involving plot to make it intriguing. Although dealing with phobias and depression, the book is also a tale of love and self-discovery. I enjoyed the fast-paced action, the humor and the warm undertones of this very southern novel
Loved it y'all! Easy and fun. I had to know if Belle would find her so couldn't stop reading.
Great read. Didn't know much about Tennessee William's play "Streetcar named Desire" so this book prompted me to read that first - I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to reading Mary Kay Remick's next book.
This is a great book by Mary K. Remick. I would recommend this book to everyone. What a great story.
